The Victims Fund has been set up by the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), with effect from 1 January 2014. The objective of the Victims Fund is to fund projects and activities that will provide further knowledge of or support for victims of crimes and road accidents and groups of such victims.

Grants will only be awarded to projects and activities, not individual victims directly.

The funds of the Victims Fund stem from victim payments made, for example, by persons who receive a suspended or non-suspended sentence for violating the Danish Criminal Code or other legislation, by persons who accept a fixed-penalty notice or receive a fine for violating the Danish Criminal Code, and by persons who accept or receive a conditional or unconditional disqualification from driving or a ban on driving for violating the Danish Road Traffic Act.

The Council of the Danish Victims Fund is expected to award about DKK 28 mio. every year.

The funds of the Victims Fund are administered by a council composed of a chairman and two other members, one appointed upon recommendation by the Danish Rectors’ Conference (Rektorkollegiet) and one appointed upon recommendation by Victim Support Denmark (Offerrådgivningen i Danmark). Members are appointed for a period of four years and may be re-appointed.

The Council of the Danish Victims Fund and the Secretariat of the Council of the Danish Victims Fund are responsible for considering grant applications under the Act on the Council of the Danish Victims Fund and for any related administrative tasks.
